A New Approach To Problem Solving.
The Maths Project is a problem-solving and communication platform where students solve rich mathematical challenges and create videos explaining their reasoning. By making mathematical thinking visible, teachers gain deeper insight into student understanding while students develop confidence, mathematical language and reasoning skills.
Students view a short video, introducing a rich mathematical challenge.
Students acquire deeper understanding of mathematical concepts when they are allowed to ponder over a problem independently, prior to any explanation being provided by the teacher (Ergen, 2020; Kaitera & Harmoinen, 2022). This pedagogical approach is known as “Teaching through problem solving”. Learn More
Students work independently, in pairs, or in small groups to explore possible strategies.
Collaborative learning has been found to benefit students academically (develop critical thinking and problem-solving techniques), socially (develop support system and learning community), and psychologically (reduced anxiety and improved self-esteem) (Laal and Ghodsi Citation2012). Dolmans et al. (Citation2005) outlined group-work as a ‘stimulus for interactions’, with students required to work collaboratively and develop their skills of communication in order to communicate reasoning. Students create a short video explaining their reasoning, working out and solution.
Oral communication is also relevant to learning maths, including speaking and listening, as well as understanding vocabulary. Teaching mathematical language orally can be supported by using rich mathematical representations, including visual models and examples (McDonald et al., 2011; Miller & Armour, 2021). Learn More
Students and teachers watch together, gaining powerful insight into understanding, misconceptions, confidence and mathematical language.
Collaborative learning has been shown to not only develop higher-level thinking skills in students, but boost their confidence and self-esteem as well. Group projects can maximize educational experience by demonstrating the material, while improving social and interpersonal skills. Students learn how to work with various types of learners and develop their leadership skills. Learn More
Meet the team behind The Maths Project
Mark Mckelson
Mark Mckelson is the founder of T2L Education and creator of The Maths Project. He works directly with schools to trial the project's four-step problem-solving model, test new mathematical challenges, and investigate how student reasoning, collaboration, and video explanations can improve mathematics learning outcomes.
Emeritus Professor Peter Sullivan
Emeritus Professor Peter Sullivan is one of Australia’s leading mathematics educators, with more than 30 years of experience in teaching, research, and professional learning. As Expert Problem Writer for The Maths Project, Peter develops the rich mathematical challenges published each week, ensuring they promote reasoning, problem solving, and deep mathematical thinking.
Rob Vingerhoets
Rob Vingerhoets is a highly respected mathematics consultant, author, and educator who has worked with schools across Australia and internationally for more than 30 years. Rob is renowned for designing engaging low-floor, high-ceiling mathematical tasks that challenge all learners while building mathematical reasoning, confidence, and language. Rob joins the team as an Expert Problem Writer, developing weekly problems.
