What is the The Maths Project?

The Maths Project is an online platform where students access rich mathematical challenges to practise and improve mathematical thinking, talking, problem solving and explaining. Students are encouraged to explore different strategies, justify their thinking and communicate how they reached a solution. The platform gives teachers engaging, classroom-ready problems and tasks that help make student thinking visible and build confident, capable mathematical problem solvers.

A Simple Process for Deeper Mathematical Thinking

Students engage with the challenge, choose a strategy, explain their mathematical thinking and learn by comparing ideas and receiving feedback.

Problems Trialled in New Zealand Schools

We develop and trial four types of mathematical challenges for students: Problems, Rich Tasks, Discussion Challenges and Teacher-Led Tasks. Each resource is tested in real classrooms and refined through what we observe and learn from students and teachers. This ongoing process ensures our challenges are engaging, purposeful and responsive to the mathematical needs of students.
